Closing Time

I’m listening to Closing Time as I write this:

So strange to think that I last posted in this blog over a year ago! I see my last entry was before Halloween 2007 so I’m guessing that the typical holiday rush started and I didn’t have much free time to write for the next few months. Normally I think I would have resumed posting in January 2008 after “normal” life returned…but if I remember correctly, I discovered Facebook right around that time.

Yes, after denying so many invites and fighting many pleas to join, I finally succumbed to peer pressure and joined “Crackbook” at the beginning of last year. I thought I would just briefly use it to see what the hype was all about and I was so sure I would return to my comfortable world of Friendster in short order.  Alas, it was not to be. Facebook quickly made sure I realized who was in charge and my social network was promptly owned/pwned (yes, both are accurate) by it in no time.

Since then I’ve visited my Friendster page occasionally and it’s been nice, like saying hello to an old friend. But my visits were so infrequent, I often forgot I had a blog on here, which is why I’ve been “silent” for so long. It has been sweet rereading my old entries though…brings back many fond memories and my ramblings amuse me as always. I hope that my words also entertained you in some small way. =)

However, seeing as how I don’t plan to really return here, I think the time has come for me to close this particular window into my life. Don’t worry, I’ll keep all the old entries up for nostalgia’s sake but this will be my final post here. I’ve enjoyed the ride and it was a nice intro into the online world of shared writing, even if Friendster’s bad wysiwyg editor often drove me crazy (good thing I always keep some super rusty xhtml in my cyber-pocket). I’m sure we’ll meet again online somewhere…until then, take care!

My Sick Routine

I LOVE this dance routine…totally sick!
Destini and Jamille performing to “Shake” by Ying Yang Twins, choreography by Shane Sparks

Nope, this isn’t a posting about some cool dance moves of mine…sorry!  Although I should check my friends’ old video tapes of archived hip hop footage of us from way back in the day. Hopefully our choreography doesn’t look too, um, sophomoric (literally…1997!) now.  But if you want a dance fix, do what I do and watch the above clip a few times in a row…so hot!!!

I was sick this past weekend. =(  Friday night I felt under the weather, but I figured my fatigue was due to a long work week, so I still went out.  I finally got to watch The Go! Team (I missed them last time they were in town) in concert at Mezzanine.  It was kind of funny because I used to work just a few buildings away from the venue during my Arup days and had always wanted to walk over after work to watch a concert or go clubbing but never did.  Now that I’ve been inside and have seen what a nice place Mezzanine is, I really regret wasting that convenient proximity!

The band was totally entertaining and fun as expected.  The lead singer has this nonstop dancing energy I just love and I really like how over the course of the entire concert, practically all the band members took turns playing all the different instruments!  In this day and age of limited musical education in our schools, one has to admire such versatility and talent. =)

Oh, and the DJ who was spinning during the preshow and intermission…SO good.  He spun different genres from chill downtempo to old school hiphop to good 80s (yes bad 80s music does exist) to ambient to memorable rock…a whole crazy, lovely musical journey.  And he mixes well…all his transitions were very smooth and tight. I don’t hear that kind of prowess very often anymore.  I have got to find out where else this guy spins!

Anyway, when I woke up Saturday morning…I was completely sick!  And of course, with my luck, it was a simply gorgeous summer day outside.  What is it with me being stuck indoors on beautiful days?!  Grrr…  I spent the rest of the weekend trying to get better and fortunately was able to work on Monday (I’ve got too much on my plate to be sick right now!) so I guess I had some kind of quick 48 hour bug.  But sitting at home all weekend coping with being sick got me thinking about what my “routine” is when I am ill.

I’m sure vague scientific research somewhere will support my theory that when one is sick, one always seems to revert to some ingrained routine of reaction and treatment.  Some really independent people become giant babies while others demand a dark room and absolute silence.  Still others will be in complete denial of the illness and do nothing while there are those who immediately get heavily medicated.  But no matter how or what you’re like when you are ill, I bet you go through the same process each and every time.

I’m not the super fussy type of patient who get whiny and needs her pillow fluffed every three seconds.  Nor do I go out of my way to prove that I am “totally fine” while hacking up a lung.  I also try to not take medicine unless absolutely necessary…I’m just not a fan of being doped up.  What I do get particular about is my food.  When I’m ill, I like to eat all the things I ate as a sick kid.  I suppose since I’m far from home, it’s comforting to “regress” with old familiar habits.  Since I can’t get my mom’s TLC here, food is the next best thing!

High on my things-to-eat-when-sick list is Ritz crackers and bananas.  No other cracker hits the spot…it has to be Ritz and it has to be with bananas.  As a kid, I would eat this combination all the time, not just when I was sick.  But now as an adult, pretty much the only time I eat these two together is when I’m ill.  I guess being sick triggers some kind of craving for them!

I really like drinking mint tea with some sugar or honey.  In a perfect world, I would drink this one particular brand of German mint tea (oh Alpine Village how I miss thee!) but I have no idea how to buy it here in the Bay Area.  If any of you reading this has a German grocery hookup, let me know!  I acquired this favorite from my dad…it’s a holdover from the decade he spent living in Germany.  Sehr gut Vater!

I also like eating toast and soup together.  Like many people, I have a fondness for chicken noodle, although it doesn’t have to be a specific kind.  Fortunately, over the years of much cooking and occasional colds/flus, I have mastered making a very yummy homemade chicken noodle soup that’s actually pretty easy to cook.  And yes, I can certainly make a pot for you sometime. =)

The dish I really crave when I’m sick is chao.  That’s Vietnamese for porridge/congee/jook/etc.  But not just any chao…I want my parents’ chao long.  I can do an okay approximation of the dish (because you know, we’ll never be able to make it just like our mom/dad does) but when I’m sick, no can do.  My parents’ chao long requires a fair amount of work to make these special mini-meatballs, chop up all the other meat, and then sit over a hot stove stirring the pot for some time (it’s easy to burn the bottom, unlike regular soup).  Obviously, when one is sick, barely coherent, and half falling off the bed/couch/comfy horizontal surface, advanced Asian cooking is a bit out of reach.  So, every time I’ve been sick these past seven years in SF, I’ve always suffered through this craving. =(

Fortunately I didn’t have a cough or very sore throat this time around, but when I do, I have this thing about sucking on lemon wedges with salt.  I didn’t even like it much when I was young, but I guess it’s just a comforting habit now.  Also, if I have to take a cold/flu syrup, it’s always Robitussin if I have a cough or chills and Triaminic (the orange flavor) if I’m feverish or congested.  I remember being reluctant to take Robitussin (oh, watch Chris Rock’s hysterical bit on “Tussin”) when I was young because of its bitter taste, but I would get really excited if my parents decided I needed Triaminic…that stuff must be 99.99% pure sugar!  Heh heh…

I think those are my only real requests when I’m sick. Other things like room temperature, how much light/darkness is required, being alone or with company, noise level, etc….I don’t have a specific preference.  I like to think that I am pretty easy-going in general, whether I am healthy or not!  It figures though that my particular preferences would revolve around food…so true to my character, eh?  What about you…what is your sick routine?

No Trance? No Fair!

San Francisco LoveFest 2007

I just realized that LoveFest (formerly known as Love Parade) is this weekend, and I really want to go, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to. Missing it would suck…I wasn’t able to make it last time so I vowed to go this year.  As I’m not one to skulk about random underground warehouse parties (it’s all junior high kids now!) and there are no more huge, crazy commercial raves in the area, going to LoveFest reminds me of the golden era of the trance scene.  There’s nothing like a pulsing, synthesized bass beat to put a huge smile on my face. =D

If you’ve never watched the parade, or attended the afterparty at the civic center plaza, or the after-afterparty, or the parties after that (seriously…nobody sleeps when LoveFest comes to town), then you don’t know what you’re missing.  If you hate trance, it’s still a wonderful visual treat.  If your feelings towards trance are lukewarm, this event could well push you into the infatuation stage.  And if you have a full-blown case of trance love/lust/obsession, well, then, you’ve had this date circled on your calendar for the past 364 days and I need say nothing further.

There are no good trance clubs in San Francisco.  On a side note, there are also no decent hip hop (my other musical preference) clubs here either…what is up with that?!  Anyway, if I’m lucky, sometimes there will be a good DJ spinning at a random club that I hear about through word of mouth.  But usually I’m at a party and a DJ might play a few anthem hits…that’s normally the only public trance fix (heh, I’m so tempted to do a pun here but I’ll refrain from the obvious) I get.  LoveFest is my annual chance to listen to a lot of good trance spun by a who’s who list of DJs at countless venues.  Outdoors in the heart of the city?  Check.  Ambient?  Check.  Progressive?  Check.  Jungle?  Check.  In a gorgeous landmark historical building?  Check.  The Chemical Brothers, Sasha, and Skills & Spundae?  Check, check, and check!  Oh how I love LoveFest!!!

There are two reasons why I’ll probably miss LoveFest.  The first issue is time.  I already have plans Saturday morning and night, so squeezing in the trance-athon during the afternoon will be kind of tricky.  The second issue is company, or lack thereof.  Everyone in my life who would normally be interested in going with me is unavoidably busy with activities like being out of town, working overtime, etc.  Ugh!  I’m all for independent females, but I would not go to LoveFest alone (ask me about the traumatic occurrence that happened last time involving a nasty guy, dog collar and public full-frontal nudity at the main stage…eeewww!) because that’s just asking for trouble.

So…odds are slim that I will get to go watch the trance extravaganza.  But if you, my dear Friendster friend, are reading this and want to check it out…definitely hit me up and we’ll try and make it work. Otherwise, I’m going to have to plan a trip to Europe shortly to get a proper trance fix . Not that I have a problem with that…but it would a few thousand dollars cheaper to go to LoveFest this weekend!

Warning: Long Post, Available Snacks Highly Recommended

Maybe it’s because I like to eat. A lot. Or perhaps it’s because I have moments of chef-ness in my kitchen (feeding others makes me happy =). And ultimately it might be because I am fortunate enough to have spent my adult life in a foodie town such as San Francisco. Whatever the reason, I have a very healthy (some might say unhealthy!) appreciation for all things food-related. Enter my stomach’s muse — Food Network TV.

I wake up; I immediately wonder what I have to eat. I stuff myself at dinner; I still want a big dessert (or five…if you don’t believe me, just ask Jackie). I’m gaming in the middle of the night; munchies are mandatory. I’m at a restaurant; I order the special that normally feeds a family of four. I need to buy some seafood for one; I go to Costco. I’m writing a blog entry on Friendster about food; I end up eating a bunch of dried mango slices, lots of pieces of naan (three different varieties!), leftover biriyani/creamed spinach/curried shrimp, strips of snack nori and many cups of hot chocolate. For people such as me, The Food Network is both a gift and a time-draining curse. You know you’ve got it bad when you watch the original Iron Chef come on…and it only shows at 4:00am on weekday nights!

So, for my fellow Food Network aficionados, or the rest of my friends who are just really bored at work, I present to you Helen’s Ultimate Breakdown of Food Network TV Shows (cue drum roll please):

$40 A Day - Interesting at first until I realized that Rachel Ray plans these meals for either birds or bulimics! She meets her budget each day by eating a $3 twig for breakfast, a free cup of water for lunch, and then ta-dao, a $37 burrito that weighs 10 pounds for dinner. Talk about binging and purging… Also, spending under $40 per day on food isn’t that hard to achieve. I’d like to do the $20 A Day show and wow y’all with my frugal yet yummy choices!

30 Minute Meals - A decent show with homey recipes that work for busy people. However, what is up with Rachel’s insistence on carrying 50 things at once? And the orange eye shadow? Ewww…

Ace Of Cakes - Ah, Duff Goldman and his wild and wacky staff. I love them all because they are so anti-establishment and I think it’s very cool that he hired a bunch of fringe artist friends to work with him instead of your usual pastry chefs. For such a rough-and-tumble looking guy, he puts out some very pretty cakes.

All American Festivals - This occasional program (it doesn’t seem to have a regular programming slot) features random food festivals across the country. There are huge specialized events for things like pie, BBQ, beer, etc. And closer to home, one of the fairs they have featured is the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Barefoot Contessa - I don’t watch her much because I think I need to be at least 20 years older to really appreciate her. With that being said, she does have a wicked chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Behind The Bash - I think Giada De Laurentiis is a sweetheart, but this show is surprisingly uninteresting, considering it’s all about glitzy parties with celebrities. “I only have one hour to make 10,000 crab cakes!” (SNORE) Also, I think it’s funny how she wears a “normal” outfit during the prep and then changes into a party outfit during the event, but basically looks the same since she’s always all dolled up.

BBQ With Bobby Flay and Boy Meets Grill - He’s cooking meat over an open flame. Need I say more? =9

Dave Does - Dave does what? This sounds like the beginning of a bad title for one of those videos…I don’t think I really need to watch this show!

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives - I’m all about food joints, so I like watching Guy Fieri find the greasiest food in the country. And just when I think I’ve learned everything there is to know about frying, someone somewhere throws something into hot oil and I’m like “I can’t believe they just fried that!” Also, I seriously think that Guy needs to go visit his cardiologist on a monthly basis.

Dinner: Impossible - Ah, was there ever a more cantankerous but still likable British chef? I think not! While I wouldn’t enjoy Robert yelling at me for botching some sous chef duties, I would still work in his kitchen anytime. His turnaround time is awesomely impressive…I want to see him take on all the Iron Chefs at once!

Easy Entertaining with Michael Chiarello - Ho-hum. Not great but not bad. He’s got some basic Italian recipes that I’m sure are tasty. Now if only we could inject him with some personality…

Emeril Live - I don’t like the show. I don’t particularly like Emeril. I’m sure he’s a fine chef and I’d try eating at one of his restaurants, but the excessive BAM-ing and weird humming make it too hard for me to watch. Also, if he’s got to “kick it up a notch” every single time, then doesn’t everything end up just average anyway?

The Essence of Emeril - This is surprisingly better than his live show because he doesn’t make as many strange noises while in the kitchen…he more or less just cooks. However, I think he went too far to the other end of the spectrum and ends up looking pretty bland, although still better than Michael Chiarello.

Everyday Italian - I’m not a guy, and I’m not a girl who likes girls [like that], but it really doesn’t hurt to have a good-looking host like Giada. She’s got the world’s biggest smile, but she’s such a cutie pie. Plus, I like her commentary as she strikes a nice balance of being informative and interesting, but not becoming distractingly chatty like a certain other brunette on The Food Network.

Food 911 – I haven’t watched this but I know it’s supposed to be about fixing a food issue, like if you over-salt something. However, for some reason it makes me think that it should be the title of a show where they check out the kitchens and recipes of firemen around the country. I hear those boys can really cook (and be hot calendar pinups!) so I’d totally watch such a show. Hey, maybe I should pitch this show to The Food Network with me as the host???

Feasting on Asphalt - This was a pretty cool road trip that Alton Brown went on. I still don’t want to eat sheep brains like he did, but I am looking forward to watching the upcoming second iteration. Hopefully he doesn’t break anything this time!

Food Finds - I’ve never heard of this one…I think it’s supposed to be about finding specialty food items, but all I can think of is that it should be a show about finding food in a survival situation, like in the middle of a desert. They could team up with Man Vs. Wild!

FoodNation with Bobby Flay – I haven’t checked out this show, but it makes me wonder how Bobby has time to even sleep with the bazillion shows that he films?

Food Network Awards - I didn’t get to watch this one, but I don’t know if I want to. I wonder how interesting could it have been as it seems like the awards would have gone to only the few chefs The Food Network keeps on their payroll?

Food Network Specials – This sounds like it could be good, but I don’t think I’ve watched any episodes yet. Are they just one time programs? I do know it’s not to be confused with The Food Network Challenge. =P

The Food Network Challenge – Very entertaining, although I don’t like how I’m starting to see the same faces at all the competitions. Hey producers…start scouring the country for new talent already! The sugar challenges are always the best because of the high potential of breakage, and the pieces are just so pretty. Makes me want to pull sugar and/or blow glass. Time to re-evaluate the career track!

Giada’s Weekend Getaways - There’s nothing wrong with this show, but it feels too similar to Rachel’s Tasty Travels show (which came first) to get me very excited about it. Also, I spend the whole episode wondering if/when her hubby will drop by, which is distracting.

Glutton for Punishment with Bob Blumer - I’ve only caught one episode so far as it’s a new show, but I am intrigued. You have to admire someone who is willing to push their stomach to the limit and do crazy things like enter pepper speed-eating contests with only a week of prep! Kobayashi, here comes Bob!

Good Deal with Dave Lieberman – I think this is the same guy in Dave Does. I’ve never watched it, but the title keeps making me think that David Letterman is about to come out and say “Good deal, or no deal?” and then Howie Mandel will barge in somehow.

Good Eats with Alton Brown - A classic. I really really really enjoy watching this show. I’m basically a nerd, so Alton’s factual science-y approach really appeals to my sensibilities. Throw in his goofy charm, Asian (yeah!) gadget mistress, realistic time-lapse (as opposed to the usual swapping out with the pre-cooked dish), and you’ve got a winner. I also must admit to liking his campy little skits. Did I mention I’m a dork too?!

Good Food Fast with Family Circle – I have no idea when this is on. Plus, I didn’t know Family Circle was still around! I’m not trying to be mean, but I just don’t know anyone who reads it…do you???

Guys’ Big Bite - Guy basically cooks the kind of real-man-food he finds on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Bring on the mondo rack of ribs!

Ham on the Street - This show was a little too random for me. I didn’t mind George Duran’s humor, but I just didn’t think he tied in his comedy routine with the food and show very well. Plus, I don’t think it’s a good idea to mix jokes with food…too many sprayed airborne particles are usually the unfortunate result. =\

Healthy Appetite with Ellie Krieger - I have no idea what this one is about, but hopefully it’s more than just eating a lot of tofu and micro-greens. Also, is it bad that I haven’t hit a point in my life yet where I’m really analyzing nutritional content and caloric intake? Bad Helen, bad…

How To Boil Water - Another show I haven’t watched, but hopefully there’s a big bachelor audience…those guys need to survive somehow before they get married off!

The Hungry Detective – This probably isn’t fair of me, but whenever I try watching this show, all I can think of is the stereotype of big cops in donuts shops. And it doesn’t help that Chris Cognac is a big cop. So when he tries to talk about eating “healthy” while on the beat, I obviously have a hard time taking him seriously. But I will still say this is a great show because he is a cop with cop friends and I’m not stupid. Usually.

Inside Dish With Rachel Ray – Rachel Ray chats it up with a celebrity before cooking with them and/or attending a meal together. My, she certainly is ubiquitous, isn’t she?

Into The Fire – Okay, this show title should totally be for the firemen and their food idea that I had earlier! =D Alas, it’s about the behind-the-scenes of restaurants. (yawn) I haven’t watched it. (double yawn)

Iron Chef - Ah, this show makes me want to reign supreme! The Chairman’s shirts are awful frilly monstrosities, I’m tired of the pasty actresses and their breathy giggling, the dubbing is incredibly campy (I am a woman who likes her Asian movies with subtitles), but the food, oh, the food! If those dishes taste half as good as they look, then perhaps I too would be reduced to breathless giggles. I wouldn’t change a thing!

Iron Chef America – A very good although of course a weak sauce version of the original. Morimoto is strangely subdued, Cat Cora seems to lose more than win (then why is she an Iron Chef?!), and having floor reporter Kevin Brauch seems unnecessary. Oh, and for the 20th time, the host is NOT The Chairman’s nephew…it’s called acting! Also, in the event of a tie, they should have another cook-off like the Japanese do.

Kitchen Accomplished – Considering how much I like before-and-after shows, like flipping homes and makeovers, this show doesn’t do much for me. I can’t say it’s bad, but kitchen makeovers by themselves aren’t so thrilling. Maybe it’s because I want them to continue remodeling the rest of the house, or have Cat Cora live there as a private chef for a while, or find out that the homeowners become crazy master cooks, but no, none of the above. =(

Molto Mario - Although I think Mario Batali is an incredible chef, I can only take so much of his orange clogs (are they Crocs? Yuck!) so I pass on this show.

The Next Food Network Star – Decent, but if I want Survivor-style food competition, I’m still going to prefer Top Chef. These competitors either can’t cook or are afraid of the camera. Why are they trying to be Food Network stars then?!

Nigella Bites - Why would you have a show that declares how you suck? =P

Nigella Feasts - Uh…maybe she should get together with Dave Does…

Party Line With The Hearty Boys - I’ve never watched this, but I will say that I think it’s lame that these two could enter as a couple in The Next Food Network Star show. I mean, what’s next, someone wanting to compete with their entire extended family? I’m sure they are a great pair, fun to watch, make good food, etc., but let me put it this way…would you be okay if a couple wanted to compete in Project Runway, a spelling bee, or an election together? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Paula’s Home Cooking - I used to like this show…I mean, Paula Deen puts at least a stick of butter in every dish that she makes, including salads! And Helen + butter = happiness, most of the time. But after a while her food just didn’t look that good anymore…everything is so, so, well, yellow! Can one get jaundice from too much butter?!

Paula’s Party - I’ve only tried watching this once, but never again. I’m sure she is a sweet and wonderful woman in real life, but watching a married older woman (with grown children) flirt with all Y chromosomes that cross her path is just too much. She kisses guys every chance she gets, giggles like she’s in junior high and makes creepy innuendos towards men throughout the entire show. Totally gross.

Quick Fix Meals with Robin Miller - I’ve never seen this one, but is it like a poor man/woman’s version of 30 Minute Meals? Sorry Robin…I’m not trying to diss you but Rachel Ray is the one with the talk show…

Rachel Ray’s Tasty Travels - There’s nothing wrong exactly with this show, but I always get the nagging feeling that all the places showcased here are the rejects from $40 A Day. =(

Recipe For Success – Food entrepreneurs are featured who are trying to grow their business or just simply break even. The show follows them as they try to realize their goal of opening another branch or starting a mail-order business or other such small business steps. Pretty interesting actually, especially when you see how these people will gamble their life savings or take other similar drastic measures (some move back home with their parents!) to try and make their culinary dreams happen.

Restaurant Makeover - I can’t say if this show is good or bad…it just is what it is. I guess the producers thought mixing “Flip This/That House” with a cooking show would be good viewing? One episode does stand out in particular, when an owner either didn’t have enough money, or didn’t want to deal with the permits for gas lines, so he installed an electric stove in the kitchen. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, an ELECTRIC stove in a restaurant. Nobody even wants an electric stove at home, so needless to say, he had trouble finding a chef willing to cook on it.

Road Tasted – Paula’s sons seem like cool guys, and there’s something to be said about Southern gentlemen! And since the point of this show is to let the viewer know how to get the exact same food they are eating (via delivery), it’s not as frustrating as other shows where the host gets to eat yummy food while you just watch enviously. However, I can’t believe how much it costs to deliver some of these things! For a sample of the over-the-top markup, just watch the Philly cheesesteak episode. Unbelievable!

Roker On the Road - I’ve never seen this, but I’m still debating if I’d want big or small Al Roker to be hosting a food show.

Sara’s Secrets – No idea what this one is about, but doesn’t it sound like the name for a TV movie on Lifetime? Probably about anorexia, or drug abuse, or both?

The Secret Life Of… – A fun and informative look at the history and making of foods. I haven’t had the opportunity to watch many episodes, but I’ve enjoyed the few I caught. I think they switched or are switching hosts though, so I wonder what the backstory on that is.

Semi-Homemade Cooking With Sandra Lee - First of all, I wonder if she is related to Sara Lee? Secondly, although I think this show definitely fills a niche and does have helpful hints, what is up with her over-the-top tablescapes as well as her disjointed hair/makeup/outfits? Full Kabuki makeup with cargo pants? Pearls with a logo t-shirt? Aunt Edna’s entire wicker collection piled on a table with feather boas, all masquerading as “elegant” decor? Someone needs to call either Queer Eye or What Not To Wear for her, stat!

Simply Delicioso - This is a new show, and I guess I’ll try to give it a chance and watch at least one episode. But if that “chica” (she’s supposed to be cooking yummy Latin-inspired food but her last name is Hoffman?!) tries to give me that doofy finger snap in the face, I am not responsible for what happens to my TV screen or her website guestbook.

Sugar Rush - I am neutral about this show…the host is nice and he’s talking about sweets, so he can do no wrong. However, the commentary is just totally dull. On a personal note, I stopped by his store when I was in the D.C. area and he does make some very delicious cupcakes! And while I was enjoying said yummy cakes with frosting, who should stop by but Warren Brown himself! I didn’t say hi or get a photo op (I’m from L.A. and we leave celebrity oohing and aahing up to the rest of the country but I did notice that he is a very tall man. Not as tall as my identical 6′7″ Slovakian twin brother Peter, but close!

Sweet Dreams – I haven’t watched this show before, but I found out it’s about desserts, which means I have to watch it. =) However, when I looked up show times, it plays at 4:30am on Fridays…ack!

Throwdown with Bobby Flay - It’s entertaining to watch, but they need to find more impartial judges. The judges always say things like “I’ve been eating Jessica’s pancakes for years and I love them! I will now sit down to judge Bobby’s and her pancakes with absolutely no bias.” Oh, and also, even when the judge is a neutral party, if they just pick the dish with the extra weird flavors, 90% of the time it will be Bobby Flay’s. He can never just make a good old-fashioned meatloaf, it has to be all funkified.

Top 5 – This show sounds like it’s interesting. I like lists of things, as well as countdowns, so I would probably like watching this. However, seeing as how it is on Mondays at 9:30am and I have this thing called a full-time job, I don’t think I’ll be catching it anytime soon. =P

Tyler’s Ultimate – I have not watched any episodes of this show, but apparently it is like Good Eats minus all the science. I’m sure the food is delicious but like a good little nerd, I do like juicy scientific facts!

Unwrapped – Ah, Mr. Double Dare himself, Marc Summers! This show can be interesting, especially all the assembly line shots. Even though it’s been many decades since we’ve automated the processing and packaging of foods, I still watching mechanical stuff like the speed conveyor belts and robotic arms.

Wolfgang Puck’s Cooking Class - I like the Wolfgang Puck restaurants. I like his frozen pizzas. But this show, not so much. Nothing against his culinary skills or charisma or recipes, but I simply cannot understand what he is saying a lot of the time. Now, I’m not blaming him or his accent…he seems like a good guy. Maybe it’s just me…when they were handing out the foreign accents comprehension part of the brain, I seem to have missed out. Sorry Wolfie.

So there you have it. Helen’s exhaustive (and exhausting!) article on every single show the Food Network has listed. If you made it all the way down to here, kudos to you! You’re either a great friend who likes to read, or you need to find a more challenging job. =) Anyway, stay tuned next time for my coverage of the other network that I can’t stop watching (hint: it’s the one all the metrosexuals are talking about)!

Run Little Pink Nano, Run!

Apple_ipod_nano_4gb_pinkI got an iPod Nano for Christmas.  A pink 4GB second generation one to be exact.  I guess now my pink RAZR phone has a rosy partner in crime as I am packing two super skinny electronic doodads in all their metallic pink glory!  At this rate, I’m going to need to replace my silver PDA with a sweet pink successor or at least put it in a pink cover (um, probably not actually)!

There are a few ramifications to having my new iPod.  The most obvious one is that I have finally joined the legions of fervent Microsoft-must-die design mavens who love all that is Apple.  I’ve never owned one of their products in my life (I love right-clicking much too much) but now I find myself in possession of the ultimate Apple gadget, white earbuds and all.  Ack!

Despite a mild feeling of having sold out (I have been a Windows chick for over a decade now), I love my new MP3 player.  It’s small, sleek and plays a gazillion songs…what’s not to like?!  I just have to be careful I don’t lose it because it’s so deliciously tiny!

Another ramification is that I will now have musical moral support for one of my 2007 resolutions:  running!  Yes, you heard that right…despite a lifetime of insisting that I. Do. Not. Run. No. Matter. What….I have decided to try a more pedestrian (ha ha, me so punny) lifestyle and run on my non-volleyball weekdays.  Will I die?  Probably.  But at least I’ll go out looking hot with my chic Nano!

So obviously I’m a little nervous about this whole running thing, but I am also experiencing some anxiety directly related to owning an iPod.  Apparently, despite having MP3 device in hand, I’m not truly a member of the Apple family until I also get totally accessorized!

That’s right…the final ramification of owning an iPod is that I am supposed to pimp my player.  The iTrip, iDog, iBeam, iDock, iTalk, iDon’tKnowWhyiAmBankrollingSteveJobs seem to all be required to join the “in” crowd.  And here I was just hoping to buy a simple band or strap to attach my iPod to my arm. But I would like some portable speakers for tournaments. And a radio receiver would be nice. Maybe a docking station system for home use too… Dang it, you see how the downward slide begins?! I’m going to draw the line at blinging out it out with pink Swarovski crystals though. Really. Seriously. I promise.

Oooh…look…pink sparklies…so pretty… =P

No Ordinary Morning - Chicane

I would like to dedicate this song to a good friend who is going through a rather melancholy period right now.  Add in all the recent rain and this song creates the perfect pensive mood.  Click on the title below to watch/listen to it:

No Ordinary Morning - Chicane

If there was nothing that I could say
Turned your back and you just walked away
Leaves me numb inside I think of you
Together is all I knew

We moved too fast but I had no sign
I would try to turn the hands of time
Then look to you for the reason why
The love we had passed me by

And as the sun would set you would rise
Fall from the sky into paradise
Is there no light in your heart for me?
You’ve closed your eyes, you no longer see

There were no lies between me and you
You said nothing of what you knew
But there was still something in your eyes
Left me helpless and paralyzed

You could give a million reasons, change the world and change the times
Could not give me the secrets of your heart and of your mind
In the darkness that surrounds me now there is no peace of mind
Your careless words undo me, leave the thought of us behind

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

I feel like I’ve spent the bulk of the last two weeks in transit somewhere.  I had two weddings to attend in Houston and New York City and also managed to squeeze in some quality family time in the Washington D.C. area.  If I were to describe the past fortnight in terms of transportation methods, it would go something like this:  car, plane, car, plane, car, plane, car, bus, taxi, train, taxi, car, bus, taxi, plane, car.  Whew!

When I calculated all the time spent traveling (NOT including time spent doing related things like waiting for a cab, layovers at airports, talking to the rental car agent, or driving around looking for parking), I realized that over the course of nine days, I sat in a plane or train or automobile for at least 35 hours.  Yes, you read that right…35 HOURS!!!  Sadly, I easily spent another 15 to 20 hours going through security lines, waiting for luggage, signing paperwork, waiting for others to board, etc.  I can’t believe I spent more time traveling than sleeping…that’s depressing! (sigh)

Well, at least I got to cross another state of my list since I had never been to Texas before. They’re not kidding about the stereotype…everything really is bigger out there (I don’t think that’s necessarily a good thing). And the toll you have to pay every few miles on the freeway is super annoying. However, the people are quite friendly and the food is very tasty in a super fattening do-ya-want-a-third-order-of-fries-with-that-two-pound-steak kind of way. =P

Two And A Half Months

Question:  Does anyone actually watch the show Two and a Half Men?

Has it been that long since my last entry?!  How time flies when one is having fun. =)  Or has inconsistent internet access. =(  I’m sorry I haven’t written anything in awhile, but due to being very occupied of late, coupled with the “death” of my laptop (well, the network access portion of it anyway), I had let the blogger in me go on hiatus.  I was lucky to even stay current with my email, mooching off the computers of friends, work and sometimes even strangers!

I can’t believe summer is over.  How I miss the days of happily running around in the sun wearing my flip flops.  Now that autumn is here, well, I do still run around in my flip flops, but not so happily.  More like grumpily…if you know me at all, you know that I hate being cold.  I apologize in advance if I’m extra grouchy when winter hits!  It’s times like these that the warmer weather in Southern California beckons…I should head south soon.

At any rate, the last couple of months have been filled with a surfeit of volleyball, concerts, hiking adventures, meeting many new faces, and even a little broomball thrown in for good measure.  I can go into more detail in the future, but suffice it to say for now that life has been very good to me since the last time I updated you.  I am one truly happy–albeit rather busy and tired–camper.  Which reminds me…I have got to go camping next year!

Anyway, what with this being the first day of November and all, the holiday season is officially upon us.  I never got around to buying plane tickets to fly home for Thanksgiving, so I guess I’ll be driving down in a few weeks.  However, I might cook my sort-of-annual turkey feast for my Bay Area “family” before I go, but I’ll need someone to host the party this year as my place is too small.  Anyone want to volunteer their kitchen? =)

Well, I hope you all had a fun and safe Halloween.  I didn’t get to celebrate it this year since I was traveling out of town, but at least the pressure was off for me to come up with a cool costume idea.  I did miss hanging out with my girls and the rest of the crew though…next year, I promise!  In the meantime, if any of you have some candy to spare from your trick-or-treating loot, I’d be much obliged if you send some my way.  Sugar decreases my aforementioned grumpiness!

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Mullet

A quick recap of my weekend:

The Good - burgers at Fuddruckers, tapas at Isa, crepes at Savor, free CDs

The “Bad” - Marina Green Draw, late night dessert with Anita and Mike

The Ugly - Miami Vice (2006)

The good parts of this weekend obviously involved a lot of food. =9  I went to Fuddruckers in Daly City on Friday night and had a super tasty BBQ bacon mushroom burger…I’m such a sucker for a big fat(ty) burger!  Saturday night I went to Isa in the Marina for some decadent French tapas, including seared dayboat scallops, potato wrapped seabass, and seared duck breast…what is with me and seared food?!  Sunday afternoon I went to Savor in Noe Valley, which is one of my favorite crepe places.  If it’s a nice day, definitely sit on the patio!

Afterwards, I walked around 24th Street for a bit and saw that Toyota was having some kind of giveaway in front of Streetlight Records.  To promote their new car Yaris, they were handing out $15 gift certificates to the music store.  All we had to do was sit in a Yaris as they briefly drove it around the block (literally…we only went around one block and the guy didn’t even try to do any kind of sales pitch!) and fill out a short one page questionnaire when we were done.  So for a very easy ten minutes worth of “work”, we got a combined three free CDs!!!

The bad parts of the weekend weren’t actually bad…more like suboptimal.  The tournament on Saturday was cool, especially since I drew my buddy Ryan as my partner for the day.  But our court had a big mud pit and we didn’t end up winning so that wasn’t so fun.  Sunday night I went over to Anita and Mike’s place and I brought fresh mangoes and ice cream to share…I’m such a sucker for dessert!  I had fun with them as usual but it was “bad” because we didn’t have that much time to talk and just hang out together.

The ugly part of the weekend was really awful.  I watched Miami Vice on Friday and it SUCKED.  I liked the old TV series and I had such high hopes for the movie because they cast good actors and Michael Mann is usually such a great director.  But the plot was weak with bad dialog and the acting was rather poor.  Also, what is up with the hideous mullet on Colin Farrell’s head?!  At first I thought the movie was set in the 80s, which would make his hair okay, but it’s not!!!  I spent most of the movie just staring at the stupid thing. Eeewww!

I Want My Friend’s Friends…DVDs

Some memorable quotes from Friends:

Monica: “That? That would be the work of a Blowfish.”

Chandler: “You have to stop the Q-Tip when there’s resistance.”

Rachel: “Who’s FICA? Why is he getting all my money?”

Ross: “Hey, remember when I had a monkey? Yeah, what was I thinking?”

Phoebe: “They don’t know that we know they know we know.”

Joey: “Why do you have to break up with her? Be a man. Just stop calling.”

On my recent trip to LA, I spent some time with Heidi and Scott.  We had a blast hanging out and making fun of each other (as usual) and also squeezed in a tasty dim sum meal.  Before I left, Heidi let me borrow season one and two of Friends.  I’ve always been a big fan, but Heidi is hardcore since she actually owns all the DVDs for the series!  While I’ve watched the majority of Friends’ episodes, I know I haven’t seen them all so I thought it would be a good idea to watch them back to back from the beginning. =)

Can I just say that I am completely enamored with watching a television series on DVD?!  There are no commercials and I get a lot more continuity since I’m watching a bunch of episodes all at once, so remembering what happened to who is much easier.  The best part though is that I don’t have to worry about cliffhangers anymore.  Does an episode ends in an unresolved and thrilling manner?  No problem…I can just press play again or simply switch the disc to see what happens next.  This might well change the way I watch TV forever!

I’ve finished watching all of season one and am halfway though season two right now.  So far there aren’t any “new” episodes that I didn’t already see, which doesn’t surprise me because I was pretty good about catching Friends each week during their first few years.  But around the midpoint of the series run, I was rarely home on Thursday evenings (probably because of volleyball!) to follow the latest developments.  I started to lose track after Phoebe had the babies, Monica and Chandler shacked up, and Joey was rehired by Days of Our Lives.

I didn’t like Friends that much when it began, but it grew on me because one of my old college roommates was a huge fan and she kind of forced the rest of us to let her watch it on our TV every week.  The very first episode I saw was the one where Rachel and Ross finally kissed.  I remember the moment it happened, there was this tremendous collective roar outside from people watching all across the dorm complex.  There must have been thousands of students who could not stop cheering, but at the time I was like “What’s the big deal?” =P
